How Books are Leather Bound
You can send your own book or your own set of papers to be bound as a leather book in your choice of styles. If I am binding a hardcover book in the basic or medieval style, I usually try to keep the cover intact if it is made of good quality binder's board and the inside pages are studily sewn in (better not to disturb the original integrity). After stripping off the the bookcloth or paper, and adding details such as raised bands on the spine and bookmarks, I glue on the new leather (soft cowhide), completely changing the style and durability of the book. In the case of a soft cover book, I remove the cover and make a new one just as I do for your papers.
When stitching and binding your papes, I hand stitch or have machine stitched the pages (depending on the thickness) and add endpapers and headbands. I make the leather cover separately and prefer to gold stamp monograms, names or titles on the book cover before the last step of gluing in or "casing in" the stitched text block. Now you have a durable and beautiful heirloom book
