I have always rescued what I could from beautiful old broken books. The gold tooled fragments shown on this page are from various books, including some gorgeous Family Bibles from the late 19th century with carved and gold-tooled leather covers. The first two pictures show how I remove each gold fragment from a bible, and thin it down before adhering it to a new leather book. All the material on the back of the leather has to be "skived" or pared down on a slab of marble so it will not come loose from its new cover.  Some fragments are tooled onto a cloth cover, and are often the most durable.

I place the individual fragments in the position where it seems most in proportion to the cover, and VERY carefully adhere it - a couple of examples are shown below.
